How to Stop Stream Drops When Switching From WiFi to 4G

You're live, walking out the door, and the moment your phone lets go of WiFi for 4G — black screen. Or worse: the stream technically survives but freezes for ten seconds while chat asks if you died. Here's what's happening under the hood and how to make switches invisible.

Why plain streams break on network change

When your phone switches networks, its IP address changes. A direct RTMP or SRT connection is bound to the old route: every packet sent toward the dead path disappears until either the OS reroutes (slow) or the connection times out (fatal for live). Even a 'successful' switch means seconds of silence upstream.

Fix 1 — Bond both networks with SRTLA

The definitive fix: send packets across WiFi AND cellular simultaneously through a relay that speaks SRTLA. When WiFi vanishes, packets simply stop taking that path — nothing rebinding, nothing timing out. To viewers it looks like a brief quality dip, not a drop. This requires a phone app with SRTLA (Moblin, IRL Pro, BELABOX) and an SRTLA-capable receiver.

Fix 2 — Raise your latency buffer wisely

In SRT/SRTLA settings, the latency window determines how much loss can be recovered in-flight. Too low and every hiccup becomes visible corruption; too high and you add delay. For city walking, 2–4 seconds is a sane range. Bonded streams forgive lower values than single-link ones.

Fix 3 — Two carriers beat one big one

• ▸Different carriers rarely congest at the same cell — diversity is real redundancy
• ▸Keep WiFi as one of your bonded links whenever possible: it's usually free bandwidth
• ▸Disable WiFi assist-style features that fight your manual bonding decisions
• ▸If using one SIM, lock the phone to prefer LTE data even near strong WiFi you don't trust

Fix 4 — Prepare the graceful failure

Bonding prevents 99% of visible drops; prepare for the last 1%. An OFFLINE scene with music and a 'back soon' card keeps the channel alive during total coverage loss. Managed relays like PerHost trigger this screen automatically when all links die, and restore video without you touching anything.
